Auspicious Wisdom Teachings’ of Lalita Tripura Sundari
The great goddess Lalita, the Lovely One, is also Beautiful of the Three Cities. In her mythologies and symbolism she is at the very heart of the tradition that today is called Auspicious Wisdom. But even more importantly she is embodied in mantra, mudra, and, of course, the most famous image of all Hindu Tantra, the śrīcakra (or śrīyantra). In our seminar we will explore the heart and soul of this essential form of the Great Goddess. We’ll learn her stories and history and how she came to represent the most exquisite and sophisticated goddess of the later Tantra. We’ll explore her esoteric presence in mantra, mudras, and the basics of the sricakra and the puja that forms the core of her practice.
Douglas Brooks is a scholar of Hinduism, South Asian languages, and the comparative study of religions. He lived in India with his teacher, Dr. Gopala Aiyar Sundaramoorthy, for many years studying and practicing Srividya, Auspicious Wisdom, and the modern traditions of goddess-centered Tantra. Currently Professor of Religion at the University of Rochester, he holds both Masters and his doctoral degrees from Harvard University.
